The Gentle Lurch kann man eigentlich nicht als Folkband bezeichnen. Dazu sind die Lieder der Dresdner Band zu unverhofft, zu nah am Experiment. Sie mögen keine Wiederholungen. Sie nutzen Elemente aus Folk, Country und Americana weil sie deren emotionale Direktheit mögen und ordnen diese neu. Workingman’s Lurch ist ein textreiches, narratives Album, voll von unverhofften Wendungen und zahllosen kleinen Details. So hat Ludwig Bauer (Lestat Vermon, Woods of Birnam) zwei erschütternd schöne Streicher-Arrangements beigetragen und an einigen Stellen erweitert sich die Mehrstimmigkeit der bis zu drei Sänger/innen um einen Chor aus Müttern. Zum einen ist da das sanfte Murmeln von Lars Hiller, das der Band in der Vergangenheit Vergleiche zu Lambchop, Tindersticks und Bill Callahan eingebracht hat. Auf ihrem dritten Album jedoch nimmt die wunderbare Stimme von Pianistin Cornelia Mothes wesentlich mehr Raum ein. Und mit ihr etwas, das man auf den beiden vorangegangenen Alben nicht für möglich gehalten hätte: Pop und eine vormals ungekannte Direktheit. Workingman’s Lurch ist beides: Trost und Beschwerde in einem.

It is difficult to call The Gentle Lurch a folk band, but it’s also difficult to call their output experimental music. There are only three choruses on the whole album. Most tracks are like journeys from point A to point B, others level and rise like waves on an ocean. They use elements of Folk, Country and Americana, because they like their emotional directness. But they realign them into something different. Ludwig Bauer has written two harrowingly beautiful string arrangements and, from time to time, an obscure ‘Choir of Mothers’ expands the polyphony of voices of the band’s three lead singers. Their songs are lyric-heavy and narrative. Cornelia Mothes takes up much more room on this record, confronting Lars Hiller’s stoic sing-song manner of recitation with a comforting, almost redemptive element. She also brings a previously unfound directness and pop-affinity to the band’s third record. Workingman’s Lurch is both: consolation and complaint.
