„I’m not good at relaxing. I like to be busy.“ lächelt der Songwriter John Blek aus Cork, Irland und veröffentlicht gerade sein fünftes vollwertiges Studioalbum innerhalb der letzten fünf Jahre. Dass „Thistle & Thorn“, so heißt sein aktuelles Werk, wiederum den zweiten Teil eines sorgfältig angelegten Vier-Album-Zyklus darstellt, ist für Blek im Gespräch über sein momentanes Arbeiten kaum eine Erwähnung wert.
Inspiriert von der üppigen Natur und geschrieben in einem Rutsch in einer irischen Sommerfrische 2017 („I’ve never been more aware of the passing of time and our fragility than I was that Summer.“), wurde die Platte im Anschluss im heimatlichen Cork und in Louisville, Kentucky (USA) aufgenommen. Produziert haben Brian Casey und John Blek selbst. In den Staaten holte man sich Joan Shelley (amerikanische Sängerin, die u.a. mit Bonnie Prince Billy kooperiert), Nathan Salsburg (Folk-Gitarrist und Kurator der Alan Lomax Foundation), Anthony Fossaluzza (Organist bei Freakwater und Wanda Jackson) und den Drummer Davie Ryan ins Studio.
