Es geschieht nicht oft, dass man ein Album in den Händen hält, das nicht nur die Tiefen und Facetten eines Genres vermisst, auslotet oder erforscht, sondern dessen Grenzen tatsächlich zu verschieben scheint. „Knots“ von Sons Of Noel And Adrian ist ein solches Album. Die einzelnen Musiker in Sons Of Noel And Adrian haben das Genre Folk und seine Spielarten in den letzten Jahren zu weiten Teilen mitgestaltet haben. Bereits mit ihrem Debüt waren sie gemeinsam mit Mumford & Sons und Laura Marling auf Tour. Teile sind außerdem in Bands wie The Miserable Rich, The Leisure Society und Laish aktiv. Das Willkommen Collective aus Brighton, in dessen Zentrum wiederum die Sons Of Noel And Adrian stehen, wurde einmal als folkiges Pendant dessen beschrieben, was Broken Social Scene für die Indie-Musikszene darstellt. Als Teil von SONAA jedoch fügen sich all diese talentierten und geschichtsbewussten Einzelkönner einer übergeordneten künstlerischen Vision, die man nur mithilfe einer endlosen Liste an Verweisen zu fixieren vermag. Artrock, Filmmusik, British Folk und seine zeitgenössischen amerikanische Protagonisten wie Bill Callahan oder Will Oldham (dessen „Lesson’s From What’s Poor“ auf dem Debüt gar fragmentarisch gecovert wurde) tauchen auf und ab inmitten cinematischer Dramatik („Jellyfish Bloom“), eruptiven Tribalrhythmen („Big Bad Bold“) oder schierer epochaler Wucht („Matthew“). Das Album, dargeboten durch eine ganze Streitmacht großartiger Musiker hinter dem prägenden Bariton von Hauptsongwriter und Sänger Jacob Richardson, kommt so dem kaum vergleichbaren Live-Erlebnis eines SONAA-Konzertes nahe. Der Albumtitel beschreibt deshalb vielleicht am besten, was „Knots“ auszeichnet. Inspirationsquellen werden nicht nacheinander ausgestellt, sondern bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verknotet, geschichtet und verwirrt. Deshalb steht dieses Album auch für sich. Wie ein Felsen an der Küste, auf dem man einen Leuchtturm errichtet hat, der Schwarzlicht aussendet.

Knots, Sons Of Noel And Adrian’s sophomore album, sees them breaking far away from the acoustic roots of their debut album which lead them to tour twice with Mumford & Sons and support Laura Marling at Royal Festival Hall. The duelling fingerpicked classical guitars are still there, but they're put through cranked up, needle-in-the-red valve amps. There's still a bit of banjo, but it's played with an e-bow and a slide so it sounds like a haunted Hammond organ. At times soft and orchestral, at times crass and loud, Knots is always infused with beauty and tenderness: soulful, taunt, honed and with a new found love of kosmiche experimentation.
