Das große Besteck liegt erstmal beiseite. Lestat Vermon ist das Soloprojekt des Polarkreis 18- und Woods of Birnam-Gitarristen Philipp Makolies aus Dresden, der nun mit seinem Debütalbum „Clouds“ den klangästhetischen Gegenentwurf zu seinem bisherigen musikalischen Schaffen veröffentlicht. Kein Bombastrock, kein wild schnaubendes Orchester, sondern elf schlichte, in sich ruhende Songs auf der alten Nylonsaitengitarre, entschlackt, zurückgenommen und höchstens mal von vereinzelten Klaviermelodien oder dezenten Bläsern und Chören durchzogen. Lieder der ersten Instanz, bei dem das Gitarrenarrangement schon alles leisten muss, was einen Song zu einem guten macht. Ob nun bei „Into The Woods“, „The River“ oder dem instrumentalen „Hillside One“ - die musikalische Ruhe und Ausgeglichenheit der Stücke zieht sich auch thematisch durch das Album. Sich gänzlich von dichten Wäldern schlucken lassen. Den Himmel von unterwegs nach vertrauten Bildern absuchen. Oder das samtene Dunkel der Nacht, das Schutz und Gefahr zugleich bereithält. „Clouds“ entzieht sich wieder und wieder dem hektischen Gewusel der Städte. Denn die wirklich wichtigen Antworten liegen für Philipp Makolies woanders. Viel, viel weiter draußen.

The big silver has been put aside for now. Lestat Vermon is the solo project of Philipp Makolies, guitarist of Polarkreis 18 and Woods of Birnam from Dresden, who releases with his debut album CLOUDS the sound aesthetic counterpart to his former work.
No bombastic rock, no wild snorting orchestra, just eleven simple, restful songs on the old nylon string guitar, purged and restrained and sometimes underlined by piano melodies or subdued trumpets and choirs. Songs of the first instance, where the guitar arrangement is the most important thing to make a good song.
The musical tranquility and balance of songs like Into the Woods, The River or the instrumental Hillside One characterize the album. Swallowed by dark forests, travelling and scanning the horizon for familiar pictures, or entering the dark velvet of night, which yields shelter and danger at once. Over and over, CLOUDS moves beyond the hectic bustle of the cities. For Philipp Makolies the really important answers are somewhere else – far, far afield.
